EP: 31 Discipline Equals Freedom – Part 2

This is a continuation of my review of Jocko Willinks new book Discipline Equals Freedom Field Manual. In part one we went over the first half of the book that was titled “Thoughts” Today we’re going to dig into the second half of the book titled “Actions”. Actions is exactly what it says it is, it’s a collection of actions that Jocko recommends we take in order to live fuller, healthier, and freer lives. As with part one of the book, Jocko lays out the truth as he sees it, and quite honestly he’s not wrong. It’s hard to read some of what he has to say and not be humbled, but isn’t that the way real truth most often is? Allow me to take six excerpts from the latter half of Discipline Equals Freedom Field Manual so you can have a small taste of goodness that’s inside these pages.

EP: 30 Discipline Equals Freedom – Part 1

I was recently able to pick up Jocko Willink’s new book Discipline Equals Freedom Field Manual and today is part one of a two part review of that book. I’m breaking the review into two parts because the book itself is broken into two parts and I feel that the parts are both very important and yet very different. Part one of Jocko’s book is titled Thoughts and contains 89 pages on which are written what I would call trueisms or statements about life and living that Jocko himself has made. I found these statements to be powerful, direct, and emotionally charged. Many of the statements Jocko makes left me saying to myself ‘but I’m not like you Jocko, most people aren’t like you” and that is incredibly true. But after finishing all 89 pages, what I realized was that Jocko Willink is not saying with these statements that they are true for everyone, he’s saying they are true for him and that they CAN be true for all of us as well. I’m going to read a selection of six excerpts from Discipline Equals Freedom Field Manual, section Thoughts so that you have an understanding and a feel for what you can expect and get from this book.

EP: 29 Choose Wisely

Choose wisely who you follow. We are bombarded every day by people shouting “Follow Me!” On Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, social media exists to create legions of followers. I say again, choose wisely who you follow. Who you follow is very much the same as the people you surround yourself by. One of my favorite sayings is that we are the sum of the people we spend the most time with. So too are we the sum of the people we choose to follow, both on social media and in regular life. Think about the people you are following; are they uplifting, honest, encouraging, humble, and loving? If not, what five traits would you assign to each of the people you follow? If hateful, snide, bullying, mean, or angry is on your list then that is what you are inviting into your life. Our goal is to be BETTER, and to be better we have to follow those who can help MAKE us better. Fill your life with good people, fill your time with good things and fill your mind with good thoughts.

EP: 28 Heroes

We’re talking this week about Heroes. I have always been a fan of heroes, I think that’s just a natural part of growing up an American. We surround ourselves with people we call heroes: Soldiers, firefighters, police, sports stars, heck cartoons characters even. Lots of people get labeled as heroes that are just regular people doing what they needed to do at in the moment, but there are plenty of other heroes that don’t necessarily shine in any one moment, but instead spend years or even decades living life with purpose and integrity. The dictionary defines hero as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. I can tell you from personal experience that I have undeservedly been called a hero for just doing my duty while in the service. My definition of hero is someone who displays uncommon courage, self-sacrifice, and a willingness to do what’s hard when they know both the effort that will be required and the danger to themselves, their family, and their friends that NOT going forward will bring.

EP: 27 Stop Waiting

I want to start the podcast with a personal challenge to you, I challenge you to STOP WAITING. Stop waiting for the perfect time, stop waiting for the perfect idea, stop waiting for perfect life. The world is an unpredictable and dangerous place. This year alone has seen massive earthquakes, record setting hurricanes, rampart wildfires, dangerous floods, riots, and mass shootings. ALL of these events should be blatant signs to get on with our lives, and to get on with our dreams. We can’t know when our last day on this earth is, and while I know that I have eternal salvation after my death I still cherish every single moment here that I have, or at least I should! Stop wasting your limited time and get busy living! Run with that idea you have for a new business, start the project, start the new workout, start being a better you. Start acting on all of those ideas you have in your head and in notebooks. Stop waiting for people to do it for you, stop waiting for the perfect economic environment, just stop waiting and holding onto the same fear and excuses and start. This is probably my shortest podcast to date, but I don’t need to spend 20 minutes telling you the same thing over and over. If you don’t start today, you may never get the chance to start at all. You can change the world, at the very least you can change the world for the people you know and love. You can do this by living your dreams, by working hard to reach your goals, and by living your life as an example to others. Take those ideas and feed them! Feed them with action, and blood, sweat, and tears!

EP: 25 Burnout – Friend or Foe?

What is Burn Out? Burnout is often described as the physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress. I personally would add that burnout is a long process that slowly erodes at you. I’ve felt the effects of burnout physically when I was deployed to Somalia and mentally with my current job. After a while in Somalia I developed a bleeding ulcer from the constant stress of the deployment. It was certainly nothing that stopped me from completing my missions, but it was a painful physical response to the high levels of stress I was under. Near the end of my deployment I developed back spasms, in direct response to the sniper threat we were always under. The mental image of crosshairs on my back caused my back muscles to clench and unclench on a constant basis. Now, with my current job I don’t have any physical symptoms of burnout, just a few of the common mental ones, like a short temper with people, difficulty focusing, and a higher level of cynicism that normal. Both the physical and mental symptoms of Burn Out can be devastating if nothing is done to alleviate the root cause.

EP: 24 One of Those Weeks

Once again, todays podcast episode is something different than what I normally do. This week I am having a one way conversation free form about something we have all experienced…One of Those Weeks. Yes I’m having one of those weeks where a bunch of things are going wrong, and we all have them. But what’s really important is how we deal with them when they occur.

EP: 23 Tools of Titans

Todays podcast episode is something different than what I normally do. This week I am doing a review of the book Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss. This is far and above my most recommended MUST READ for 2017 and I cannot stress enough how much of a difference the information inside this book can make in everyone’s life. Tim has been able to interview hundreds of the worlds top performers in all areas of life, and he has taken the best parts of the best interviews and compiled them into his book Tools of Titans. In the book, Tim breaks these interviews into the three topic areas of Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise. Along with dozens of profile chapters in each section there are also about a dozen non-profile chapters per section that are less interview and more what he’s learned. For my review I am going to discuss one profile per topic that I have found to be of incredible value in my life and I’ll discuss why I believe this to be the case. Keep in mind that I’m only discussing the parts I consider MOST valuable, almost every chapter has something in it that speaks to me, informs me, or motivates me!

EP: 22 The Secret to Luck

Today’s episode is all about luck, what it is, what research tells us about luck, some awesome examples, and finally, the real secret to having good luck! We hear stories everyday of how people made it big because they got lucky, or how someone lost everything due to bad luck. Stories like these can lead many people to believe that the most important thing is luck or that luck is somehow better than hard work and determination. In fact, this line of thinking taken to the extreme can lead people to the conclusion that all you need is luck. But there’s something much more important than just being lucky, and that is what you do with luck or how you respond to luck, both good and bad. Before I go any further, I want to recommend the book Great By Choice by Jim Collins. You can find a link to a great deal on Jims book on my resource page at beyoundyourpeers.com. Chapter seven of Great by Choice is titled Return On Luck, in this chapter Jim lays out a wealth of information in the form of research and evidence that will blow away your traditional thinking on luck.

EP: 21 Where to Find All the Answers

There is one thing in life I can guarantee, and that is that everyone will have questions they want answered. You’re not unique in this, I’m not unique in this, we ALL have questions we want the answers to. Sometimes those questions are small, such as “how do they put the lead in a pencil” and other times the questions are life changing, more along the lines of “how do I get out of this rut?” No matter how big or small, the place you find those answers is the same. It’s the same for you, it’s the same for me, it’s the same for everyone, you find all the answers in books! Yes, books! It doesn’t matter if it’s a traditional hard bound book, a paperback book, or an E-book. For all of written history, mankind has been writing the answers to our questions in books, and right now I believe there are more books available to us than ever before. It’s literally never been easier to publish a book than it is right now. Many people I talk to are actually anti-book, they prefer to say anti-reading but that’s not accurate, they don’t have any problem reading Facebook posts, emails, or text messages. The vast majority of us are not asking new questions, we’re experiencing the same things as countless other people, and many of those people have found the answers already and were willing to share that answer in books. One of the things humanity is really good at is sharing knowledge with each other. Look at everything that is around you right now, everything was invented or created by someone, somewhere else in the world and the idea of how to make it again was shared so that YOU could have your very own copy of it. Your chair, your phone, your computer, your bed, your towel, your food, the walls of your house, everything! How to make ALL of these things is in books. And more than just how to make things are in books, how to overcome things, how to achieve things, how to do things, and the list goes on and on and on. Books are Where to find all the answers to your questions.

EP: 20 Celebrate Your Success

One of the things I notice about most people, myself included, is that we work So hard on our dreams and goals that we lose track of everything else that matters. We are so focused on our dreams, goals, and ambitions that we forget on of the most important parts of the journey, and that is to celebrate! Celebrate your milestones, celebrate where you are now, celebrate where you’re going, and celebrate the people that are helping you get there! Trust me when I tell you that a good celebration of these things will revitalize you, reinvigorate you, and bring you closer to your team. None of are equipped to just grind day after day, we NEED these celebrations, and if were hitting out short or long term goals then we DESERVE to celebrate. At a lot of newer companies there’s a common motto, “work hard, play hard”. This is the embodiment of celebration of your hard work and your success, and doesn’t just apply to your day job. For those of you who are caught in the daily grind, or who ever have been, you know what burnout is and how you get it. You get burnt out by consistent and unending hard work that never lets up. You can combat burnout through regular celebration, and you can help others struggling with the age old battle against burnout by including them in your celebrations! There are four specific reasons I think we should celebrate, and I mentioned them just a moment ago. We should Celebrate your milestones, celebrate where you are now, celebrate where you’re going, and celebrate the people that are helping you get there!

EP: 19 Time to Evaluate

Now is the time to evaluate! You may be asking yourself ‘time to evaluate what?’ and if you are that is a great question. It is so easy for us to get caught up in the busyness of life that we often lose track of where we are meant to be and what we are meant to do. How do we get ourselves back on track? We evaluate and then we adjust our lives based on those evaluations. But first we have to evaluate, and now is when we do that. Now is the time to evaluate your dreams, now is the time to evaluate your purpose, now is the time to evaluate your friends, now is the time to evaluate your career, now is the time to evaluate your finances, now is the time to evaluate yourself!

EP: 18 Overcoming Complacency

Complacency, that insidious virus that can infect us all at one point or another, especially when things are going well in our lives. Most often complacency strikes when we’ve spent a long time working towards a goal and have finally achieved it. That moment in time afterward were you’re riding high on your success, that moment is complacencies favorite time to strike. Complacency can sneak in and subtly begin to suppress your desire and potential for your dreams. Complacency can also strike at us when we’ve been grinding away towards a goal for a long time with little movement or perceived movement. These are the times when you find yourself saying “things are ok here”, or “it’s not so bad”, and even “it could be worse”. If you’ve said these things or similar recently then I want you to WAKE UP!! (smack table) Life is about more than just going through the motions, life is about more than staying in that crappy relationship or that unfulfilling job. Shake off the shackles of complacency that bind you, stand up and take back your life and your destiny! None of us know how long we’ll be blessed to stay on this earth, that time you’re wasting is precious! I have four ways to take your time and passion BACK from complacency. Simply put, they are to Recognize, Get Scary, Share, and Change. Those simple words hold a whole lot of meaning.

EP: 17 What’s Holding You Back

Let me ask you one very direct question. What EXACTLY is holding you back from achieving the success you desire, from fulfilling your dreams, or from accomplishing your goals? What’s that thing that is holding you back right Now? It takes a lot of reflection and thought to answer that question, and if you’re like most people, your answer isn’t very exact, and more often than not, the answers aren’t very accurate either. We all get stuck from time to time, but most of the time we’re not able to see what keeps us stuck without some help. Todays all about that help and getting you un-stuck. I believe that there are four areas or groups that often hold us back from achieving or even working on the things that actually matter. The Four areas that could be holding you back are: Your Thoughts, Your Words, Your Actions, and Your Friends. Now maybe you’re not being held back by all four of these groups, but most of us get caught up by more than one at a time. Let’s look at these four areas in more detail.

EP: 16 Learn to Prioritize

We all have a ton of things on our to-do plates, and the problem with having so much to do is determining what gets done first, or second, or third, or even what gets done at all! We all face this dilemma, and the way to resolve it is to learn to prioritize. When we learn to prioritize we eliminate the indecision, hesitation, and wasted time that everyone is guilty of when it comes to getting things done. When we learn to prioritize we’re able to focus our time and attention on the things that matter most when they matter the most. Take these next six steps on learning to prioritize and master them! You WILL get more done and by getting more of the things you need to get done, you’ll master a small but important part of life. The six steps to learning to prioritize are: Create a task list, determine each tasks value based on the Eisenhower Matrix, determine impact, determine amount of effort, sort your task list, and get busy!

EP: 014 The Fundamental First 5 Steps

When people first realize that its possible to be living their dreams, they are often so overwhelmed by the idea that they are unable to make the first move towards a better life. It’s the same as if I woke you from a deep sleep and said, quick start running a 5k, go go go. You’d be stumbling around trying to get your bearings while feeling the pressure of me yelling go go go. You wouldn’t be focused on the race you’d just be focused on moving. Waking up to the reality that you CAN make your ideas, dreams, and goals happen is the same, you’re so focused on just moving that more times than not you’re just taking action to take action. I want you to be taking the right actions, and be taking them from the very start. So let’s focus in on the fundamentals of your first five steps. These are: Start Dreaming, Categorize Your Dreams, Create a Vision Board, Make a Plan for Each Vision, and Make a Commitment.

WHATEVER stage you’re at, THIS is the weekend to move past it. Stop letting fear, indecisiveness, and LIFE get in the way of becoming a better you. EP: 012 Accountability to Yourself and Others

As I just mentioned, this week we’re talking about Accountability to Yourself and Others. Let’s start with my definition of accountability. I prefer to use the definition of accountability as: “taking or being assigned responsibility for something that you have done or something you are supposed to do.” Allow me to add some detail to that definition. Accountability to yourself is when you take responsibility for what you have told yourself you will do. And Accountability to others is when you take responsibility for something you have told others you will do. It seems pretty straight forward, but many of us fail at one or both of these on a regular basis. I’m going to give you six ways to improve your accountability to yourself and others. These are: Be detailed, Write it down, Keep Track, Tell Others, Follow Up, and Break Your Mold.

EP: 011 FF – Keep Moving Forward

A lot of the feedback I get from millennials revolves around the same topic. I often hear “I’m stuck in a rut”, or “I can’t seem to make progress”, or even “I don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere.” These are all valid expressions of concern and perfectly understandable. I don’t think you can find a person in the world that hasn’t felt like this at one point or another. But I think millennials feel these feelings more keenly than Gen X or baby boomers. This is in part due to the average age of millennials, when you’re in your twenties it can seem like you’re not making progress but in fact you are. Those of us in our forties have had plenty of time to work on our goals, both short and long. And we’ve come to be able to see progress over the long haul. But when you’re 24 and you’re only two years into a 10 year goal, it can be very difficult to see that progress. Your start line is still so close and your finish line so far away. I can testify from experience that mile two of a toughmudder event feels like you’ve been going forever and that you’re not going to make the finish line at mile 10. Perspective is everything. When Im at mile 9, I can typically see the finish and I can see where the hard work has gotten me. Goals and dreams are like that too, when you have just started your journey you’re working so hard but can often not yet see the results. It’s at this point where people start to slow down, stumble and eventually stop all together. But your goals and dreams aren’t a foot race, they are endurance events! A toughmudder event is a great analogy for goals and dreams. In a toughmudder event, you’ll have to struggle for every step you make, and you’ll have to accept help at many of the obstacles. Dreams and goals are JUST like that! You’ll have to struggle and put in the hard work, and you’ll NEED to accept help from others to overcome the obstacles you face. In the last couple of miles of a toughmudder event, your body is cramping and your muscles are burning. I was able to finish my first toughmudder by chanting a mantra as I shuffled along those last miles. As each foot hit the ground I would repeat one word of the mantra. Keep. Moving. Forward. Left foot, KEEP, Right foot, MOVING, left foot, FORWARD! Step after step I repeated this, and step after step I moved closer to the finish and my goal. KEEP. MOVING. FORWARD. Keep moving forwards towards your goals and your dreams. Each step you take moves you forward. Every excited and energized leap you take, every hopeful skip, every dedicated stride, every knowing step, and every weary shuffle ALL KEEP MOVING YOU FORWARD. You are only stuck in a rut, not making progress, or not getting anywhere when you STOP! You know what you have to do, so go do it! KEEP. MOVING.FORWARD!

EP: 010 Long Term Goal Setting

Today we’re talking about Long Term Goal Setting. Now I want to be clear that we are NOT talking about LIFETIME goal setting. The difference between long term goals and lifetime goals is simple. Long term goals are the goals you plan to achieve in the next year to 10 years, while lifetime goals are the goals you plan to achieve in 20 to 40 years. I break goals down into three categories: Short term, long term, and lifetime goals. I fully believe that the best short term goals are the ones that help you reach your long term goals, and that the best long term goals are the ones that help you reach your lifetime goals. Think of it as a goal pyramid, with the base your short term goals,. The middle layer your long term goals, and the peak is your lifetime goals. Like the pyramids of Egypt, it takes a LONG time and a LOT of work to complete your goal pyramid, and like those same ancient pyramids, the results of your goal pyramid have the potential to still be seen many generations after you the builder are gone.
Let’s focus in on setting your goals for the next year to 10 years. I recommend you break this down into following 5 steps: Visualize, Make a List, Prioritize, Set Dates, Create Action. These five steps will allow you to follow discover and then set your long term goals.

EP: 009 Focus Friday – NEED

Let’s spend the next few minutes talking about NEED. When I say need Im referring to the things beyond wants and desires, and definitely beyond the traditional food, clothing and shelter needs. I’m talking about the thing or things in your life that cause your internal drive and fire to BURN the hottest. The thing that you cant stop thinking about, the thing that others are tired of hearing you talk about, the thing that that has you awake hours after you’ve gone to bed. Now, are you picturing your NEED? If so GREAT! You’re exactly where you should be, but I’m betting that for most of you nothing came to mind. The vast majority of people I work with have desire, even strong desire, but only a few have turned that into a burning need that drives them to work harder, and work longer than the people around them. If you’re going to rapidly move beyond your peers, you have to feel that NEED. You have to fan that desire inside you into a roaring fire in order to make fast changes. A desire, even a strong desire combined with regular action will move you closer to your dreams over time. But for really fast change and life altering change, you MUST have the NEED.

EP: 008 Short Term Goal Setting

We’re talking today about Short Term Goal Setting. When I say short term, I’m talking about a week, a month, or even a few months. In my strategic view, anything less than a year is short term. Setting short term goals will be a huge boost to your progress and your confidence, as you achieve these goals you will be reinforcing and building your internal fire, drive, and self-confidence. I recommend that you set short term goals based on three time categories. These categories are weekly, monthly, and quarterly. Goals should ALWAYS be clear, specific, and time driven as well as actually achievable. To make it easier, I’m going to break down my system for short term goal setting into 7 steps that anyone can use. These steps are: Choose a Time Category, Write It Down, Be More Specific, Set A Date, Set A Priority Level, Schedule Time, and Be Accountable.

EP: 006 Find Your Vision

One of the most common questions I get asked in my mentorship program is “Lee, how do I find my vision or dream?” Having a dream seems like something that everyone should have either already found or easily be able to find. But in truth it’s often not that way at all. Movies, the media, and You Tube would have you believe that dreams are born in people when they are children or young adults. But clearly that’s not always the case or maybe, just maybe that’s not even mostly the case. If you have NO idea what your vision or dream is, I mean NO idea at all then hang with me, because I have five ways to help you find your vision and dream.
Let’s talk about five of the best ways I know to help you find your vision or dream that have worked for me and many others. These are seeking solitude, removing distractions, focused self-analysis, thinking big and well the last one is a secret I’ll reveal at the end.

EP: 005 Just Start!

Welcome to Beyond Your Peers Episode 005 Just Start. Im your host Lee Camden and I’ve had a lot of good feedback this week on episode 4 The Power of Starting. With that feedback in mind todays Focus Friday episode is a little bit continuation and a little bit motivation.
I want to express again how Just starting can take so much weight and pressure off of you and energize you, and revitalize your passion and push you forward. It can take you from walking to running. It’s very contagious as well! You see one person start and the energy and the power flowing through them because of that start, and you want to start something as well. I want to take this contagious energy and pass it through to you, from me to you and from you to others!
Starting builds momentum! That momentum build confidence inside us and that in turn makes starting another task or goal more likely.

EP: 004 The Power of Starting

There’s not much that’s harder to do than to start. Our internal fears, doubts, and insecurities often delay or even prevent us from starting on the things that will make our ideas and dreams actually happen. Let me tell you this now, nothing gets done without someone first starting the process. Everything great and wonderful in the world only exists because of the Power of Starting, and that power is contagious! Once you push past the fear, the anxiety, the self-doubt and start on the next thing you know to do, then you begin building momentum. That momentum is like a train, it’s really hard to get that train started, but once you do it’s just as hard for people to stop your train and derail your purpose and progress. We’re going to talk today about Why starting is so powerful, about the obstacles that can and often do prevent us from starting, and about what we can do to overcome these obstacles, both the internal ones AND the external ones.

EP:003 Focus Friday – You ARE Great!

Life is full of people that are willing and sometimes even take pleasure in putting others down. You can hear it all around you if you choose to listen to it. They say you can’t do it, you’re not good enough, you’ll fail, and on and on. I want you to know that I believe anyone motivated enough to listen to this podcast Can do it, is good enough, and WILL succeed. I know you ARE great, and you know it too! You can hear that inner voice cheering you on every time you write your dream or goal. Listen to it “You can do it, you are good enough, you will succeed. There are times everyone fails, but greatness is not quitting when it gets hard but striving through the fires of failure and marching through the ashes of defeat. For in those ashes lie the seeds to future success. Just like a forest that burns down in a wildfire, the ashes provide valuable nutrients to the next generation of trees and plants so to do the ashes of defeat provide valuable insight into the next task, goal, or project on your path to greatness and achieving your dream.

You ARE great, ignore the shouted words of scorn and focus on the whispers of success. I believe in You!

EP:002 Unlock Your Greatness

Everyone has the potential for greatness locked inside them!
No matter where we are born, what our social standing is, or how great or horrible our childhood was, the potential for greatness is the same in all of us. Yes there are people who seem to have everything given to them and yes there are people who struggle their whole lives and never make anything of themselves, but none of that defines them as great.  It’s only the people that have the willpower and focus to work on their dreams continuously that achieve greatness. It is and will continue to be a massive struggle to achieve your dream, but that dream can be a reality! You have it in you!
